Cutting Your Own Hair - Response

Hello!

Thanks for your post, fellow-Amanda. Yes, there is hope (for you and your wallet). Since you like the overall shape, I would recommend sectioning your hair off into 5 sections you can handle. Think three atop your crown area, one right behind it, and then another down by the nape of your neck. Twist each section and clip it to the center of the section so that it's out of your way. Then, starting at the bottom section, take smaller sections at a time, and simply trim them by following the cut that's already there. Instead of cutting straight across (scissors meeting the hair perpendicularly), try cutting into the hair (scissors meeting the hair at about a 30-degree angle). This is called "point cutting," and will allow the hair to have a softer edge. (It will also make any possible mistakes less visible :) ). And just repeat this process all over. Near your face, you can repeat the "slither cutting" technique I mention in the video, so that you can create better contour. If this idea freaks you out - don't do it. But chances are, if you feel comfortable enough cutting your own hair, you will also have the eye to account for some creative responsibility :)

Most importantly... have fun!

  1. Hi Amanda! well i discovered you today in youtube haha and you save my life with your video "how to give your hair volume using a flat iron" it's the best!..but i have a question please please help me! i have a long face just like u...i hate it! because i haven't found the right cut for my face. i have long hair,i just cut my ends every month. What kind of hair cut do u think will suit me? every stylist i go to insist that i should get a straight bangs,u know? the ones that cover ALL your forehead. I think it's not my best look. Hope u'll answer! :)

  2. Hey Natalia :) If you have a long face, heavy, straight-across bangs really could be a great look for you. If most stylists are recommending that for you, I'd believe them! The only potential warnings against it are these: if your hair is wavy or very wavy and you don't like taking the extra 5 minutes in the morning to give your bangs some lovin (blow dry them, that is), then don't bother. Bangs can up the maintenance factor. The other warning is that some hairlines simply don't want to do bangs. We all have a slight caulick on our hairlines, but if yours entails a really intense widow's peak, or what I like to call a "double horn" - two swirls in the growth pattern near the front of the hairline, then your hair won't like bangs. More than anything, I'm thinking your long face may benefit from something more interesting with the rest of your hair. Try soft layers or even a fun shorter 'do. And last but not least - I'm sure your long face is beautiful! We're all gorgeous; we just have to choose styles that flaunt the good stuff and create more balance. Good luck and hope this helps!
